The Definite noun

How do you know a noun is definite? If it has ال prefixed to it then it is definite. But are only such nouns definite? Can a noun without ال be definite?

In all there are 7 types of definite nouns. They are:

  1. nouns prefixed with ال : البنت، القلم، ...
  2. proper nouns: عامِر، عائشة، الزُبَيْر، ...
  3. pronouns, all of them, attached or detached.
  4. demonstrative adjectives: هذا، هذه، ذلك، ...
  5. relative pronouns: الذي، التي، الذين، ...
  6. the first noun of the possessive construction, provided the second noun is definite: كتاب الطالب، سيارة عائشة، بيتها، ...
  7. nouns after vocative particles: يا ولد، أيها الطالب، أيتها النفس، ...
