The Nominative case

The Nominative case

The Nominative case (المَرْفُوع) is the easiest case. It is indicated by:

  • the vowel endings ــٌ or ــُ for most nouns
  • وْنَ for Sound Masculine Plural
  • انِ for Dual
There are six instances a noun is nominative:
  1. Subject of a nominal sentence
  2. Predicate of a nominal sentence
  3. Subject of an active verb
  4. Direct Object of a passive verb
  5. Predicate of إنَّ and its sisters
  6. Subject of كانَ and its sisters

See examples below, in respective order.

  1. النَحْوُ مُهِمٌّ
  2. النَحْوُ مُهِمٌّ
  3. فهِمَ الطالبُ الدرسَ
  4. فُهِمَ الدرسُ
  5. إن السماءَ صافيةٌ
  6. كانت السماءُ صافيةً

They are to be learned by pairs. You learn 1, 3 and 5, and they remind you of 2, 4 and 6 respectively.

The last two demostrate how the rules of إنّ and كان are opposite to each other.
